Hello Ka-Pinoy! We have some exciting news for you today—one of the most anticipated features on Pure Pinoy Radio. Starting now, while listening to your favorite Pinoy station, you can view the full lyrics of the playing song! Let’s sing along, no more excuses!

We know the feeling: a beautiful OPM ballad comes on, the melody hits your soul, and you try to sing along—but you fall short. Half the lyrics you’re mumbling, the other half you made up entirely. “Hmm hmm hmm… ang puso ko ay… hmm hmm hmm.” You might not admit it, but we know it happens to all of us! 😄

Now, that era of guessing is finally over. Introducing the Lyrics-on-Radio feature for Pure Pinoy Radio—a first for any Filipino online radio platform.

What Is the Lyrics Feature?

The lyrics feature automatically detects the currently playing song on supported stations and displays the full song lyrics, right inside the player. No need to open a separate tab, no need to search on Google, and definitely no more humming through the chorus hoping nobody notices.

Here’s what makes it special:

  • Automatic song detection: The system reads the metadata (song title and artist name) broadcast by the radio station in real time. The moment a new song starts, it begins fetching the lyrics for that song immediately.
  • Smart lyrics lookup: Under the hood, Pure Pinoy Radio connects to a global lyrics database powered by lrclib.net, a community-driven lyrics repository that covers thousands of OPM classics, modern hits, and even regional favorites.
  • Full-Text Lyrics: The full text is displayed so you can follow along at your own pace.
  • Album art and song details: Alongside the lyrics, the player also fetches high-quality album artwork, the album name, and the release year from iTunes—giving your listening session a complete, premium feel.

It’s not just a feature. It’s an upgrade to the entire experience of listening to Filipino radio online.

Why Is This Important For Us?

Music is more than just sound—it’s a language. And lyrics are the words that bring the song to life. For Filipinos, singing is a huge part of our culture. From parties, birthdays, and weddings to hangout sessions and family reunions—there is always a song, and someone is always singing.

Think about it. How many times have you heard an OPM song and felt your chest tighten—but you couldn’t quite catch all the words? Maybe it’s a classic ballad by Rey Valera or a heartfelt track by Lani Misalucha. Maybe it’s a Bisaya love song from your hometown station that you never fully understood the lyrics of. With the lyrics feature, every single word is now within reach.

For our OFW listeners scattered across the world—from Dubai to Toronto, from Hong Kong to London—this feature has an even deeper meaning. There is nothing quite like singing along to a beloved Tagalog song when you’re thousands of miles away from home. The lyrics on screen make that experience feel more complete, more intimate, more tunay.

How Does the Lyrics Feature Work? (A Closer Look)

We know you’re curious, so let’s dig a little deeper into how this magic happens.

Step 1: Metadata Reading

Every radio station that streams online transmits metadata—small packets of information that travel alongside the audio. This includes the current song title and the artist name. Pure Pinoy Radio already uses this metadata to display the “Now Playing” info in the player. The lyrics system builds directly on top of this.

Step 2: Smart Cleaning

Here’s where it gets clever. Radio metadata is not always clean. Sometimes a station will broadcast something like “Track 08 - Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko [Remastered] (Radio Edit)” instead of just the song title. Or the artist field might read “Various Artists” or even just blank.

Our system has a metadata cleaner that automatically strips out all of that noise—track numbers, file extensions, edition tags like [Remastered] or (Radio Edit), and even the station’s own frequency or name if it accidentally appears in the metadata. What’s left is a clean, accurate song title and artist name that can be matched to the correct lyrics.

Step 3: Multi-Strategy Lyrics Search

Once we have a clean title and artist, the system performs multiple lookup attempts simultaneously to maximize the chances of finding the right lyrics:

  1. Direct lookup by artist + title — the most precise method.
  2. Reversed lookup (title as artist, artist as title) — useful when station metadata has the fields swapped.
  3. Combined search query — a broader search using both artist and title together.
  4. Title-only search — as a fallback when the artist is unknown.
  5. Artist-only search — a last resort to find anything by that artist.

All of these happen in parallel, so the results come back as fast as possible.

Step 4: Smart Ad and Non-Music Detection

Radio isn’t just about music. Sometimes there are commercials, station IDs, news segments, and more. The system is smart enough to detect when the metadata suggests a non-music segment—words like “advertisement,” “commercial,” “promo,” “jingle,” “station ID,” or “live broadcast” trigger an automatic skip. Instead of showing an error, the lyrics panel gracefully hides itself or shows a friendly message until the next song begins.

Step 5: Album Art from iTunes

Simultaneously while the lyrics are being fetched, the system also queries the iTunes Search API to find the best matching album artwork. If found, it updates the player with a high-resolution (400×400) album cover image, along with the album name and release year. This transforms the listening experience from a simple audio stream into something that feels more like a premium music app.

Which Stations Support Lyrics?

This is the part that we want to be fully transparent about: not all stations currently support the lyrics feature. Here’s why.

For lyrics to appear, the station must broadcast song metadata—specifically, the current track title. Not all radio streams do this. Some older stations stream in a way that does not include any song information, and without a title, the system has nothing to search for.

Ang magandang balita? A growing number of Philippine radio stations—especially those streaming modern, digital setups—do broadcast this metadata. And as the feature matures, we will be expanding support and adding more stations to the lyrics-enabled list.

Stations that currently show lyrics include those that:

  • Actively broadcast ICY metadata (a standard in internet radio streaming)
  • Play music with identifiable titles and artists
  • Stream content that matches entries in the global lyrics database

When you tune into a supported station and a song with available lyrics comes on, the lyrics panel will appear automatically. No setup needed, no button to press—it just works.

Full Text Mode

When the lyrics load, the player will display the entire text of the song. It is not time-stamped or synced, but all the words are there for you to read. This is perfect for those who want to study the words of their favorite songs more closely.

Our goal is simple: to put the words of every song right in your hands.

Why Did We Build This?

The answer is simple: for you.

In our analytics, we see that listeners don’t just browse—they stay and listen for a long time. Our heartbeat data—which measures how long someone listens—continues to grow. This means our listeners don’t just load the page and leave. They are here, enjoying the music, and staying with us.

So we asked ourselves: what would make that experience even richer? The answer was obvious—the words to the song. Because when you know the words, you don’t just listen. You participate. You sing. You feel it in a deeper way.

That’s what Pure Pinoy Radio is all about. We are not just another streaming service. We are a community built on the love of Filipino music and culture. Every feature we build is designed to make you feel more connected to the music, to the radio, and to your Pinoy identity—wherever in the world you may be.

Tips to Enjoy the Lyrics Feature

Here are a few tips for the best experience:

  1. Choose a station with metadata. Not all stations send song info. When “Now Playing: [Song Title] - [Artist]” appears in the player, it means that station is supported for lyrics.

  2. Wait for the next song. When you tune in to a station, the lyrics for the current song will load. If nothing appears for the first song, try the next one—the lyrics might just be unavailable for that specific track.

  3. Share your favorite lines. Did you find lyrics that struck a chord in your heart? Screenshot it and share it with your friends! Tag us on Facebook and share the words that made you swoon!

  4. Explore different stations. The lyrics feature is a great reason to explore new stations you haven’t tried before. You might just discover a new favorite station—and a new favorite song.

  5. Report issues. If the wrong lyrics appear (this sometimes happens due to a metadata mismatch), message us on Facebook so we can report it to the database maintainers.

The Future of Lyrics on Pure Pinoy Radio

We are not stopping here. Here is our roadmap for the lyrics feature:

  • Expanded station support: We will continue to add stations to the lyrics-enabled list as we confirm their metadata compatibility.
  • Community corrections: We plan to add a way for our listeners to suggest correct lyrics when there’s an error.
  • Lyrics search: We plan to make the lyrics searchable so you can find a song based on words you remember—even if you don’t know the title!
  • Translated lyrics: For regional stations, we want to explore adding English translations to better understand songs in other dialects.

This is just the beginning. Pure Pinoy Radio continues to grow, and we will keep looking for ways to make your listening experience more fun, rich, and meaningful.

Try It Now!

Don’t hesitate any longer—head over to Pure Pinoy Radio now and pick your favorite station. When a song plays and the words appear on screen, you probably won’t be able to resist singing along. And that is exactly what we want for you.

Because in the end, music is most powerful when it is felt—not just heard. And knowing the words is the first step to becoming part of the song.

Let’s sing! 🎤🎵
